No words

Most of the work I produce, I produce live, in a room with lots of people presenting, or having conversations.

However, in the past few years, I have been repeatedly asked to create custom infographics or illustrations for websites, reports, articles. It´s work that I love because it´s very relaxing (compared to live graphic recording during conferences, where my brain has to go 1000 km/hour). I can draw from my sofa, with my feet up, and listen to music while I do it. It’s my favourite work to do over Summer, so if you have any ideas floating around, give me a call!

Here is a recent example of no-words illustration, that ended up in an industry report. I was dealing with three different and wonderful people, with lots of ideas, and I am really happy about the final result. I should not say that myself, but I just did 🤣.

The process to create illustrations with me is quite simple. Here are the main steps:

  1. We have an brief exploration chat where you explain to me: how many images will you need and the purpose (where will they end up), as well as the impact you want to have, the target, etc. When I know how many images you need, and how complex, that I can draft a quotation for you.

  2. After you accept it, we start working. Ideally, it´s always a 1-to-1 conversation, meaning that I only speak to the final decision maker, one only. When more than one person is involved, the process gets longer.

  3. I make “ugly” drafts before I make the final version, and the ugly drafts often are created online, on call, in front of your eyes. These sessions are FUN and clients love to see how their ideas become real in a matter of seconds. In this way I can ask you questions and as you respond me live, which ensures that I really am understanding what you are saying and what you want. When I am done with the first draft, I will review it once more, then I will start with the execution of the final version.

This is a draft we did online, during a video call. I share my screen and the client can see in real time how the illustration takes shape.

An “ugly” draft.

One of my “ugly” drafts made in real time with the client talking to me.

4. The final version will also get the chance to be commented upon, but not remade from scratch. If that’s the case, the process starts over, but the quotation grows.

As you can see things changed quite a bit from the first draft…

After a couple of drafts and a couple of conversations, this is the final result. Took at least 8 hours to make from start to finish.

5. You can also ask me for extra elements that are extracted from the overall drawing, so you can drop it here and there into your report, to make it more visual.

What about pricing?

My prices for this kind of work are very different from the prices I have for live graphic recording, as the type of work is very different, and does not imply time-pressure and hundreds of people watching you draw live on a mega screen 👀. To make the above image, for example, it took about 8 hours of my time, including 2 to 3 calls with the client, drafting, redrafting, and a feedback round on the final version. It looks simple (at the end), but the path through was long.

If you have been thinking about having some custom-made illustration created for a report or a website, get in touch with me this summer!
